De Wet Boshoff, Executive Director of AFMA, invites all AFMA members and invited guests to attend AFMA's 74th Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on Friday, 3 September 2021. Given the current COVID-19 situation, the AFMA AGM will be hosted as a virtual event.

Leading South African Political Analyst
Justice Malala is one of the country’s most respected Political Analysts.
He is a political commentator, newspaper columnist and writes regular weekly columns for The Times newspaper and the Financial Mail magazine. Justice also presents a weekly political talk show (The Justice Factor on the independent eNews Channel, Sundays at 9.30 am and 12.30 pm). He is the resident political analyst for e.tv and eNews Channel Africa.
Between 2007 and September 2011, Malala was general manager of Avusa Media (now Times Media Group)’s stable of 44 magazines and, following that, general manager of the Sowetan and Sunday World newspapers.
Justice is a regular contributor to the Guardian in London. His work has been published internationally in newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, The Independent, Forbes, Institutional Investor, The Age and The Observer. He has also contributed to BBC Online and Deutsche Welle.
He has given talks and rendered political advisory to international and local institutions such as JP Morgan, Liberty, Lehman Brothers, Old Mutual, Investec and Edcon.
Justice is a judge on the country’s most prestigious investigative journalism award, the Taco Kuiper Awards for Investigative Journalism. He was awarded the Foreign Correspondents Association Award for Courageous Journalism in 1997.
Chief Economist, Agbiz
Wandile Sihlobo is the Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz) and the author of “Finding Common Ground: Land, Equity, and Agriculture” published by Pan Macmillan in March 2020. He is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Wits School of Governance, University of the Witwatersrand.
He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Fort Hare and a Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Stellenbosch University.
Sihlobo was appointed as a member of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Presidential Economic Advisory Council in 2019 after serving on the Presidential Expert Advisory Panel on Land Reform and Agriculture between 2018 and 2019.
He is also a member of the Council of Statistics of South Africa (Stats SA) and a Commissioner at the International Trade Commission of South Africa (ITAC).
Sihlobo is a columnist for Business Day and Farmers Weekly magazine.
Chief Executive, Agbiz
John Purchase has been the CEO of the Agricultural Business Chamber (Agbiz) of South Africa since 2007. Previously he was the CEO of Grain South Africa. Dr Purchase commenced his professional career as a scientist in South Africa’s Agricultural Research Council (ARC), serving in various research and senior managerial positions for 22 years. Dr Purchase has also served on the Boards of the Land & Agricultural Bank of South Africa and the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC) with distinction. Dr Purchase currently serves as a trustee and Chairman of the Maize Trust, and also serves as Chairman of the Board of the South African Grain Information Services (SAGIS). He is the Business Convenor in the Trade and Industry Chamber of NEDLAC and is Deputy Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee of Business Unity South Africa (BUSA), as well as serves as a Director of BUSA. In terms of the current COVID-19 crisis, he currently leads the Economic Workstream within the COVID-19 Response Task Team of the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Min Thoko Didiza, to ensure food security for all South Africans. Amongst other awards, he received the 2011 Alumnus of the Year Award from the University of the Free State, as well as the 2012 South African Agriculturalist of the Year Award. In June 2013 he was elected to the Board of the International Food and Agribusiness Management Association (IFAMA) and still serves in this capacity. In 2019 he was honoured by IFAMA and made a Fellow. In December 2018, Dr Purchase was honoured by the French Government and the title of Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit (Le Grade de Chevalier dans l’ordre du Mérite Agricole) was bestowed on him by the French Ambassador to South Africa, for his services to Agriculture and Agribusiness.
